B.S.L 2007 – Round 5 Barnton
Alan Lucas Reports
The Ecurie Barnton round of the BSL series took place on Saturday 21st July 2007.
1/32 racing
The first round of heats saw a new Super-Production lap record of 28.85 for Ross Grogan. Meanwhile David Sargent set the pace in the Open Falcon class with 24.60 and Ernest Danyi led the Novice class with 22.53.
The second round saw Stephen Siddall improve David’s time by nearly a lap, but then David went even faster in the next heat with 25.94, the fastest Falcon time of the day. Meanwhile there were even more fireworks in the top heat, with Paul beating Ross’s new record by 9 parts, Charlie Gooding improving his 3rd place time to 28.14 and Steve Sargent moving into 4th place with 27.34.
Early in the third round we had a shoot-out for top Novice qualifier. Steve Smith beat Ernest’s time by nearly half a lap, but Ernest made a big improvement in the same heat, securing top spot on 24.18.
Alan Lucas then bumped Steve out of the A final with 27.40, only for Martin Ellis to bump him out in turn with a 27.91. So to a fascinating final heat with Paul, Ross and Charlie trying to improve their positions in the top 3 and Steve trying to get back into the A final. We were not disappointed! Paul beat his new record by over half a lap, but Ross took this class to a new level with a 30.21. Charlie improved to 28.20, 1 part more than the lap record at the start of the day. As for Steve, he beat Alan’s time but an off near the end cost him any chance of beating Martin.
Matthew Siddall won the F final by nearly 2 laps from top qualifier Matthew Green, both going faster than they did in the heats. Indeed Matthew’s winning time of 37 would have given him a high placing in the E or D finals.
Paul Hackett-Evans won the E final from Roddy Morrison. John Gooding beat Christopher Green for top Junior on the day by taking 3rd place.
The top 3 Novices were all in the D final. The form from the heats proved to be a reliable guide with Ernest winning from Steve Smith. Andrew Hogg was last in this race, but 3rd Novice on the day.
Stephen Siddall won the C final from Keith Charles and Richard Wallace, Stephen and Richard taking 2nd and 3rd in the Open Falcon class. 1st place in Open Falcon went to David Sargent even though he was last in the B final. Top 2 places here went to Alan Lucas and Neil Grogan.
Predictably the A final was very fast and beat the 5 minute lap record by nearly 2 laps, although it fell slightly short of the 10 laps per minute pace set by Ross in the last heat. Ross won by nearly a lap from Shep, with Charlie 3rd and Martin some way back in 4th.

1/24 racing
Ross Grogan of GSR Design set the pace in the first heat of the team race with 94.60 laps in 10 minutes, but Charlie Gooding of CMG Slots B beat this by 27 parts in the last of the 1st segment heats. Three other teams beat 90 laps - SCD Roadhogs on 92 then Pink My Ride and E.B. Gee Bees on 91.
The 2nd segment was slower all round, SDS setting the fastest time of 89.98. GSR Design overtook CMG Slots B for the overall lead, but only by 73 parts. E.B Gee Bees moved up to 3rd, 4 laps down on the leaders, but SDS and Pink My Ride were both less than a lap behind them. The other teams still in contention, within 10 laps of the leaders, were A9 Run and SCD Roadhogs.
GSR Design were back above 90 in the 3rd segment, but only just. This was beaten in the 3rd heat by Pink My Ride and CMG Slots B, both doing 92 laps. This put CMG Slots back in the lead, by 1.75 laps from GSR Design. Pink My Ride moved up from 5th to 3rd, 4 laps down on the leaders. The next 4 teams were still in contention: E.B. Gee Bees, SDS, A9 Run and SCD Roadhogs. 4 laps covered those teams and even the last of them was only 12 laps behind the leaders.
So, much depended on the final segment. The two Barnton teams, GSR Design and E.B. Gee Bees, were in the first heat. Ross and Keith were really on it, Ross beating the best time so far with a 95.75 and Keith doing a 91. A9 Run were the only contenders in the second heat. They did a very respectable 88, but not enough to overtake the home teams.
The other 4 contenders stepped up for the final heat. CMG Slots B needed 94 to win and the others, realistically, were all aiming to beat the E.B. Gee Bees total. All the pressure led to an untidy race, won by Ernest with 89 laps. This gave CMG Slots B 2nd place, 4 laps down on GSR Design. E.B Gee Bees score survived to take 3rd place, followed by Pink My Ride, A9 Run and SDS. The latter 3 teams were covered by just a lap and a half.
