B.S.L 2007 – Round 4 Dudley
Dudley Individual.
Again there were 26 drivers with only six racing super production. The Bucknell’s had not been able to stop for the weekend. However Oaklands member Eddie Grice and Dudley’s Martin Jackson completed the line up. Martin had been concentrating on his GCSE exams and this was the first time he had raced for three months.
For the heats report I thought that it would make a change to consider the scores driver by driver instead of heat by heat. Bottom qualifier was Alex Hackett Evans with 19.73 laps. This was an improvement of almost 4 laps on last years score for Alex who improved in each heat this year. Next up was Christopher Green with 20.67 laps, which he recorded, in his first heat. Top qualifier for the G final was John Gooding with 21.72 laps, which, for someone so young on his first visit to the track, was a very good result. Next up was Steve Smith with 21.98, which he achieved on Yellow lane in his second heat. Matthew Green assured victory over his brother and revenge for the Oaklands positions by putting himself into the F final with a score 22.07 Laps in his first heat which was also on Yellow lane. Top qualifier for the F final was B.S.L newcomer Ernest Danyi who had struggled more to learn the Dudley track than he had at Oaklands on the previous day when he did very well to get into the D final. Stephen Siddall was a very disappointed bottom qualifier for the E final. Stephen who had finished second in the C final at Oaklands was top Falcon driver at Pontefract and had finished second in the B final at the southern 32 at Dudley earlier in the year so was hoping for much better than his 22.74 laps. Making it even worse for Stephen was his son Mathew who out qualified Stephen by 20 parts. This was over a lap better than Mathew had achieved last year at Dudley but a place in the E final was one final down on his Oaklands result. Andrew Hogg made his second E final of the weekend and again drove well on his first visit to the Black Country tracks. Paul Hackett Evans was the top E final qualifier but would probably agree that on his third visit to Dudley and with many years experience he really should be doing better. Roddy Morrison made it into the D final, which was a big improvement over his F, final of the previous day but his best score of 23.67 was almost a lap down on his previous years best when he made it into the C final. Andy Brown was next up and his best was within 20 parts of his best last year and again put him into the D final as he was at Dudley last year and at Oaklands this year. Glynn Taylor on his second visit to Dudley also made it into the D final, which was a slight improvement on the previous day’s Oaklands debut when he won the E, final. The D final top qualifier was Chas Keeling who improved by almost a lap on his last years result. Martin Ellis also improved by almost a lap on last years score but was only good enough to finish last in the C final. The other three C finalists all had poorer scores than they had achieved last year. Ralph and Eddie both finished about half a lap down on last year but Dave Homer was down by over 1.5 laps on last years score. David Sargent was another who improved by half a lap on last year but was just beaten for third in the B final by Sandy Parker who again showed her liking for the Dudley track. Sandy had a best heat of 25.29 which was just 1 part better than she recorded last year. The B final was two races in 1 with Steve Sargent finishing second. Steve had struggled in the heats and was a lap down on last year but drove much better in the final and was less than half a lap behind Martin Jackson. Martin showed that the three-month layoff had made little difference and he drove well all day to deserve his B final win. The A final had the same line up as at Oaklands. Again the race was split into two battles. Third and fourth place was very close throughout and Charlie Gooding who had been just two parts of a lap behind Graham Thomas in the heats was again just two parts behind at the end of the A final. In fact Charlie was third as the power went off but his super production car stopped quickly while Grahams falcon powered car rolled past. For Graham this was his fourth third place with a Falcon after beating his last years heat score by just 1 part. His score of 27.53 was almost half a lap down on his southern 32 B final score when he set the best final score of the day. The battle for the win saw Chris Thomas suffer his first B.S.L defeat in a local round for over 8 years. Chris had struggled in the heats as he did at Oakland’s on the previous day but this time was hampered when his dad took him off on the first lap. Chris then suffered a couple of off’s while trying to make up ground. Paul Shepherd drove very well in the heats and his best run of 29.49 was only 6 parts down on Chris’s record run of the previous year and over a lap more than James Cleave had top qualified with at the southern 32 round. In the final Paul drove well without any offs and his 49lap score was two more than Chris had won with last year. On this form it appears that Paul is set to take the B.S.L title for yet another year.
