Round 8 - Barnton

Thanks again to the 22 racers who attended the Barnton B.S.L round - an excellent attendance considering the clash of dates with the 1/24 Nationals.

Leader after one round of heats was Paul Shepherd with 26.84. Ian Fisher bettered this by 5 hundredths in the second round, then improved again to 27.15 in round 3, but Paul took pole position back with 27.63 in the last heat of the day. Among the Falcon runners, Stephen Siddall was the early leader with 24.61. Dave Guild improved this to 24.87 early in round 3, only for Stephen to tie that score in his last run. Stephen’s better backup score won the tie break, very significant because that gave him the last place in the B final and guaranteed that he won the Falcon class. Matthew Siddall won the F final and was first Junior. Steve Smith and David Sargent led home the E and D finals respectively. Keith Charles bemoaned his lowly qualifying position and proved his point by winning the C final by 2 whole laps and beating the B final winning time. Chris Thomas was that B final winner, some consolation for missing the A final by just 1 hundredth. Ian and Paul had a close race throughout the A final, with Ian taking the honours by 17 parts. Steve Sargent was 3rd and Norman Fawcett 4th, the whole field covered by just less than 2 laps.

Steve Sargent put SDS into the lead in the first segment of the team race with 88 laps. The race was extremely close at this point with no less than 5 teams on 87 laps! Team Dave were in 2nd place and E.B. Gee Bees 3rd. E.B. Gee Bees did 89 laps in the 2nd segment to take the lead by 3 laps from Team Dave. Baby Snakes were now 3rd, another 3 laps behind. SCD Roadhogs set the fastest time in the 3rd segment, 90 laps, to move up into 3rd place. Meanwhile E.B. Gee Bees stretched their lead over Team Dave to just less than 5 laps. E.B. Gee Bees were first to finish, setting Team Dave a target of 92 laps. Ian Fisher made a valiant effort but even the fastest time of the day, 90.37 laps, was not quite enough. SCD Roadhogs held on to 3rd place.
