Round 10 - Bolton 24/09/06

1/32nd Heats

Only five of the seventeen racers chose to use super production motors.

In the first round of heats Paul Shepherd used his to record the top score with a run of 35.19 laps. In second place was Adam Southern who recorded 34.50 laps with a Falcon. Adam was making a rare appearance and in fact had to miss the afternoon's team race so that he could travel back to Coventry to resume his studies. Norman Fawcett recorded 34.44 laps to be placed third just 3 parts in front of Chris Thomas. Top placed novice Falcon after the first round was Stephen Siddall who with 31.11 laps led Mark Croston by 37 parts. In the second round of heats only 5 drivers failed to improve their scores. The new overall leader was Adam who recorded over 36laps with his Falcon. Paul improved to 35.81 while Steve Sargent, Chris and Norman all recorded over 35 laps. These five were nearly 2 laps clear of the rest so the five "A" final places appeared to be safely secured. In round 3 both Adam and Paul scored 35.98. Norman improved to 35.21 to equal Chris's second round score but Chris had the better backup with 35.18 in round 3. The top 5 retained their A final places and the drivers in positions 6 to 9 also kept their "B" final places. Lower down the order Martin Jackson improved to 29.77, which put him into the "C" final ahead of Eric Thompson (29.12).

1/32nd Finals

The D final was closely contested, local driver Eric Thompson taking the win from Dave Homer by just 3 parts. Katy Fawcett , just over a lap behind, managed to take third from Arron Collins by 6 parts.  David Sargent took victory by nearly 4 laps in the C final from Mark Croston. Martin Jackson was a further lap behind Mark but finished ahead of Sam Griffin who had recorded a better heat score.  The B final had Chas driving a Super production car with the other 3 all using Falcons. Martin Ellis and Graham Thomas had a close battle throughout with Martin leading by around half a lap after Graham had suffered an early off. Towards the end of the race Martin had a big off which resulted in a track call. For the restart these two drivers were side by side but Martin took Graham out to gain a small lead. Graham closed the gap slightly and rolled even closer as the power went off but Martin took the victory by 3 parts of a lap. Chas was third some two laps back with Stephen Siddall fourth having already done enough to secure top place in novice Falcon.  The A final was the only final with five drivers. Chris had a good start and was battling for the lead with Paul. Steve had a couple of offs, which managed to include Adam and Norman who was forced to retire after just three laps. By the halfway point Chris and Paul were battling for the lead and were both over a lap ahead of Adam and Steve. Chris had an off which saw Paul take the lead. In an attempt to catch up with Paul, Chris had a couple more offs. This left Paul over a lap in front but now Adam had taken second place. Chris's offs had dropped him back to fourth but he caught up with the battle for second only to be involved with another off for Steve. This left Adam to take second nearly two laps down on Paul with Chris about a third of a lap behind Adam in third place. This was Paul's fifth victory of the year and he has also finished second in the other five rounds. The second place for Adam was the highest finishing position of the year for a driver using a Falcon motor.

1/24th Team Race

Adams departure left 16 drivers to make up eight teams. It was agreed that these would run in two groups of four. A lane rotation was quickly devised that would give each team three runs alongside an empty lane. In the first of the 12-minute heats Stephen Siddall of Dads Taxis set the pace with a sore of 134.49 laps. The second heat had the championships top four placed teams competing. Paul (SCD Roadhogs) and Steve Sargent (SDS) battled throughout the heat with Paul eventually winning by nearly a lap. Chris Thomas (Oakland's 1) was third some 10 laps behind on 139.81. In the third heat Norman recorded 141.80 laps to move Pirelli into the lead. The top teams still had their second runs to come and in heat four Chris improved by over six laps on his first run to move Oakland's to within just three feet of SCD Roadhogs. These two were five laps ahead of SDS. In the third round of races Paul recorded the best run of the day (150.25laps) to give SCD an 11 lead over Oaklands who in turn doubled their lead over third placed SDS to 10laps. Katy Fawcett with a run of 124.97 laps kept Pirelli in fourth place. In the fourth round Graham Thomas recorded the top score of 144.88 laps to move Oakland's up to within just 11 parts of a lap of SCD. SDS were now twenty laps behind in third place with Pirelli another sixteen laps behind in fourth despite a very good 144.63 laps by Norman. So the battle for first place was to go down to the last run which because of the five-lane track would be split between the two drivers from each team. The battle for the lead was taken up initially by Paul for SCD and Chris for Oakland's.  SCD started the section with an 11 parts of a lap lead but with Paul on the less favourable red lane it was always going to be difficult for him to retain the lead. At the halfway point Chris had put Oakland's into the lead by just over 1 lap. The second half of the segment saw Chas for SCD against Graham for Oakland's. Red lane proved to be the determining factor with Chas struggling to master this difficult lane. Graham slowly increased the overall lead to just over five laps. The resulting victory means that Oakland's still have a slight chance of the series title but they not only need to win at the finals but also need both SCD and SDS to finish third or worse.
